The Nike GPS sportswatch was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2011 and immediately provided head turning attention and caused previous industry leaders to take notice of the new kid on the block.  The new addition to the Nike time keeping family raised awareness among competitors and set the bar for future models from all corners of the market.  This sporty looking little watch incorporates the latest in GPS technology and has many new features worthy of appealing to the interest of sports enthusiasts around the world.

The various features of the Nike GPS sportswatch that I found to be of significant interest include; the slender aesthetic appeal of the time piece, the USB watch band, the ease of use with the GPS tracking software, the accuracy of the device while running and the waterproofing capabilities for swimmers or triathletes, just to name a few.

The footpod and heart rate strap accessories were also found to be useful in conjunction with the watch interface although the heart rate monitor does not provide as specific information as some other systems but instead provides very basic and generalized data for each and every run or lap.

The USB watch band is something that really caught my eye. The watch band itself is used to recharge the system and makes it an easy process to download any data stored on the device to be downloaded directly to a laptop or desktop computer. This ability is advantageous to anyone that keeps a log of all of their activities, walking and running, biking, swimming or rowing.

The accuracy of this watch is comparable to similar products currently offered on the market. This particular time keeping tool has a ‘slap’ feature integrate which allows the athlete the opportunity to mark off intervals or laps as they are completed which is useful for comparison charts.

Waterproofing for the device is set at 5 atmospheres, which in laymen’s terms means it will function as intended to a depth of 50 meters or approximately 165 feet. The capability to use the watch in the pool or out to sea while scuba diving along shipwrecks and reefs will be an added benefit to all watersport’s enthusiasts of all interests, swimmers, whitewater rafters, surfers, and skiers regardless of level of experience.

Athletes that have tried out this model find its slender fit and comfortable feel very appealing. The watch performs as designed and meets or exceeds many expectations with devices of a similar nature. The only drawbacks mentioned are the fragile nature of the glass, which breaks rather easily when dropped on hard surfaces, and the ‘slap’ feature of the GPS which varies from one device to the next. Apparently some watches trigger inadvertently when used over rough or uneven terrain while others do not.

I would recommend the Nike GPS sportswatch as a valuable tool to have for athletes from all walks of life. When compared to other models of a similar nature the capabilities alone make this device stand above competitive counterparts.
